Onions are one of the biggest sectors in exports. More than 2 mn MT in quantity has been exported during the times of 2018-19. It is now mid of the crisis because of the price escalation.
The excess rains during September-October hit the crops of Onions in Karnataka and Maharashtra. These are two of the major onion production states, and farmers aren’t able to harvest more because of the wet field. So consequently, they boosted average wholesale prices by 120% within a fortnight at the Lasalgaon market in Nashik district; from Rs 25/kg on October 19 to Rs 55/kg on November 4.
This caused a major hike in the prices and because the rain was double than the last year, it damaged the crops on one-third of Maharashtra.
Indian onions are top in demand in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Sri lanka, and Nepal, Bangladesh. They hold the top spot in terms of importing onions from India. With nearly 5.78 mn MT of quantity whereas Malaysia on the second with 3.35 mn MT.
One of the biggest onion consuming countries, India is mid of the onion crisis because of price rising and heavy rainfall in recent months.
Talking about Delhi, despite a huge amount of availability of onions in the state, the price is rising more than Rs.80/KG. which has affected exporting even more difficult.
While other Asian countries started taking advantage of it, China has reduced its onion price which has led India’s customers to get away and the Country’s started losing most of its market.
