India is ranked 129 out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index. Introduced by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) as part of its Human Development Report 2019.
India ranked 130 last year. The steady progress was due to nearly three decades of rapid development. It had seen a dramatic reduction in absolute poverty, along with gains in life expectancy, education, and access to health care.
The overall index, given in the 2019 HDI report of UNDP, showed that India scored 0.647 in 2018, as against 0.643 in the previous year. Which is higher than the average loss due to inequality for medium HDI countries, at 25.9 percent, and for South Asia, at 25.9 percent.
